The design and upkeep of our house has always been an important part of our lives. Who among us is not familiar with the great pleasure that exists in acquiring a new painting for the wall, a new armchair for the television corner or a colorful carpet for the children’s room? Some prefer minimalistic spaces and others will pile them with a myriad of diverse accessories, but almost all are equipped in their homes with seating suites and carpets.
The only problem is that most of us are not aware of the fact that part of these accessories constitute depositories for the nesting and existence of bacteria that causes many of us, without our knowledge, serious allergies that are accompanied with nasal congestion, coughing, sneezing and watery eyes. This is the home dust mite.
It is a microscopic germ that is nourished by skin scales that dry on our bodies every day and fall off. This skin, which sheds naturally and also due to friction with random items, is found everywhere – in the air, in textile items, in the bed sheets and in our clothes. The dust mite “travels” on us freely, but without our feeling it in any way whatsoever. It does not sting or suck blood, and the resulting side effects are caused by its secretions that multiply in the air and reach the respiratory system in our bodies and the bodies of our pets.
Those who develop sensitivity to the droppings of the dust mite will suffer severe symptoms of shortness of breath, sneezing, swollen eyelids, tears, phlegm and
runny noses. To our regret, the dust mite hides in every house/office, particularly in carpets, mattresses, upholstered chairs, sofas and bookshelves and thus we cannot evade its influence. For some of you, this perhaps sounds like another experience of inconvenience and nothing else, but sometimes the allergy can be dangerous, in particular amongst babies and children, who many times do not have the ability to express the distress they feel (in particular shortness of breath and asthma which are caused as a result of the fact that the respiratory and immunity systems in their bodies are not yet completely developed and are, therefore, very sensitive.
The dust mite lives in our house precisely because there it has ideal conditions to reproduce: high humidity and areas of high temperatures, little light or darkness. These exist, to our regret, in particular in places where we sleep or sit for a long time. Moreover, it is important to know that in these points large quantities of dust also accumulate and this, as previously mentioned, carries with it the allergenic factor.
Following is an article about the dust mite:
Eliminating Dust Mites from Carpets, Upholstery and Mattresses
The best solution is to create an environment that is not good for the dust mite. For this purpose, we need to reduce the level of humidity found in the atmosphere with the aid of air conditioners, and also to take care to clean our place of residence again and again, in particular the sleeping and working areas. The cleaning needs to be thorough (yes, yes – also in the office) in order for us to succeed in easing the situation – cleaning of dust, vacuuming of carpets sofas and mattresses, washing the floor, washing the curtains and clothes regularly and changing the bedding that is in use every two or three days.
Every few months, it is recommended to use the services of professional people who will come to your homes/offices and will take care of the thorough and deep disinfection of upholsteries, curtains and carpets and so destroy the phenomenon of dust mite at its root, as opposed to cleaning in the washing machine, which only weakens it. Professionals will choose the machines and materials that suit every material and texture and so will arrive at the optimal result of destroying dust mites in the house without causing any damage to property.
